Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1 | INTO THE MOUNTAINS

Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Camp | 1,615 m – 2,651 m

Your adventure begins at Nyakalengija, where you meet your mountain crew and prepare for the journey ahead.

Leaving the foothills behind, the trail winds through farmland before entering the ancient forest of Rwenzori National Park.

The sounds of rushing rivers accompany you as you climb through lush vegetation. Keep your eyes open for forest birds, monkeys and other wildlife that call these slopes home.

As the forest begins to open, the first views towards the mountains appear.

By afternoon, you arrive at Nyabitaba Camp, your first mountain home.

This is where the rhythm of the Rwenzori begins: walking, discovering, sharing stories, enjoying a warm meal and resting beneath the mountains.

Overnight: Nyabitaba Camp

DAY 2 | FOLLOWING THE RIDGE

Nyabitaba – John Matte Camp | 3,505 m

The mountain reveals a different character today.

After breakfast, the trail descends towards the Kurt Shafer Bridge before beginning the long climb through bamboo and montane forest.

The terrain becomes more rugged as you gain altitude. Moss-covered rocks, thick vegetation and steep sections remind you that the Rwenzori is a true wilderness mountain.

At Nyamileju Rock Shelter, pause and look towards the magnificent peaks of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke, weather permitting.

Beyond the forest lies a strange and beautiful alpine world of giant heather, lobelias and groundsels.

Eventually, John Matte Camp appears through the mist.

Rest, enjoy a warm meal and prepare for another day deeper in the mountains.

Overnight: John Matte Camp

DAY 3 | INTO THE ALPINE WORLD

John Matte – Bujuku Camp | 3,962 m

Today, the landscape becomes increasingly extraordinary.

Crossing the Bujuku River, you enter the remarkable Bigo Bog, where giant lobelias rise from the landscape and the trail winds through the high-altitude vegetation.

The pace becomes slower. The air becomes thinner. The views become bigger.

Eventually, Bujuku Lake appears, surrounded by towering peaks and dramatic valleys.

Mount Baker and Mount Stanley dominate the horizon, creating one of the most memorable scenes of the trek.

Your camp lies beneath these giants.

Tonight is a chance to rest, acclimatize and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.

Overnight: Bujuku Camp

DAY 4 | TOWARDS THE HIGH MOUNTAIN

Bujuku – Elena Camp | 4,541 m

Today, you leave the familiar behind.

The trail climbs steadily through the spectacular Groundsel Gully, surrounded by giant plants that seem to belong to another world.

The vegetation becomes smaller as the altitude increases. The air becomes colder. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged.

Ahead lies Elena Camp, your base for the summit attempt.

This is an important day for acclimatization and preparation.

Your mountain guides will brief you on the summit climb, check your equipment and discuss the expected conditions.

Tonight, you rest high above the valleys, knowing that tomorrow is the day you came for.

Overnight: Elena Camp

DAY 5 | MARGHERITA PEAK

5,109 METRES | THE SUMMIT DAY

This is the day.

You wake before dawn, when the mountain is quiet and the sky is still dark.

After a light meal and final preparations, you begin the ascent towards Margherita Peak.

The summit journey demands concentration, patience and determination. You will move across steep rocky terrain and, depending on current mountain conditions, sections of ice and glacier.

With the support of your experienced mountain guides and the appropriate technical equipment, you continue upwards.

Step by step.

Breath by breath.

Until finally, Margherita Peak appears beneath your feet.

At 5,109 metres, you have reached the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Take a moment.

Look around.

Celebrate.

This is more than reaching a number on a map. It is the culmination of days of effort, teamwork and perseverance.

After celebrating the summit, begin the careful descent towards Elena before continuing towards Scott-Elliot Pass and the beautiful Kitandara Lakes.

By evening, you arrive at Kitandara Camp tired, proud and carrying memories that will stay with you long after you leave the mountains.

Overnight: Kitandara Camp

DAY 6 | ACROSS THE HIGH PASSES

Kitandara – Fresh Field Pass – Guy Yeoman Camp | 3,261 m

The adventure continues.

Leaving Kitandara behind, climb towards Fresh Field Pass, reaching approximately 4,282 metres.

From the high pass, the Rwenzori opens up around you. On clear days, the views extend towards the Democratic Republic of Congo and across the surrounding peaks.

From here, the journey becomes a long descent through changing landscapes.

Pass through rugged alpine terrain and the historic Bujongolo Rock Shelter, associated with the famous 1906 expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi.

Eventually, you reach Guy Yeoman Camp, where another rewarding day in the mountains comes to an end.

Overnight: Guy Yeoman Camp

DAY 7 | THE JOURNEY HOME

Guy Yeoman – Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija

The final morning arrives.

The trail descends through the lower mountain zones, passing through bamboo and forest as you gradually return towards the world you left seven days earlier.

The Mubuku River accompanies sections of the descent before the trail reconnects with the Nyabitaba route.

With every step downward, the landscape changes.

Eventually, you reach Nyakalengija.

You have completed the Central Circuit.

You have walked through one of Africa's most extraordinary mountain ecosystems.

And you have stood at 5,109 metres on Margherita Peak.

Your Rwenzori story ends here—but the memories are yours to take home.

WHY TREK WITH NKURUBA COMMUNITY TOURS?

We believe the best mountain experiences are not simply about reaching the summit.

They are about the people you meet, the landscapes you discover and the communities that make the journey possible.

Our Rwenzori treks are supported by local guides, porters and mountain crews, giving you the opportunity to experience the mountains through the knowledge of people who know them as home.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Trek with experienced guides who understand the trails, weather, terrain and character of the Rwenzori.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Your trek contributes directly to local livelihoods through employment of guides, porters, chefs and other community members.

A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

We keep our approach flexible and work with you to create a trek that matches your interests, pace and expectations.

RESPONSIBLE ADVENTURE

We encourage low-impact trekking and respect for the fragile ecosystems and communities surrounding the Rwenzori.

FOOD ON THE MOUNTAIN

Good food matters when you are climbing a mountain.

Our mountain chefs prepare warm, nutritious meals designed to keep you energized throughout the trek.

Expect hearty breakfasts, packed or prepared lunches and warm evening meals featuring a combination of local and familiar dishes.

Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be accommodated when communicated in advance.

For summit day, we recommend carrying your preferred high-energy snacks.

WEATHER IN THE RWENZORI

The Rwenzori has a reputation for unpredictable weather—and for good reason.

You can experience sunshine, rain, mist, wind, cold temperatures, ice and snow during the same trek.

At lower elevations, conditions are generally warmer and humid. As you climb above 3,000 metres, temperatures fall considerably, with freezing conditions possible at night.

At Elena Camp and around Margherita Peak, expect very cold, windy and potentially icy conditions.

Good preparation is therefore essential.

THE CHALLENGE

Is Margherita Peak for you?

Margherita Peak is a serious high-altitude trek and requires good physical preparation, determination and a willingness to trek for several hours each day.

You do not need to be an elite athlete, but you should be comfortable with sustained uphill walking and challenging terrain.

Our guides will support you throughout the journey, but the mountain ultimately demands respect.

The goal is not simply to reach the summit. The goal is to experience the mountain safely and responsibly.

MAKE THE TREK YOUR OWN

Your Rwenzori adventure does not have to follow a fixed beginning or ending.

At Nkuruba Community Tours, we understand that every traveller has different plans. Your start and end points can be customised depending on your travel arrangements, accommodation, preferred route, or the destination you would like to visit next.

And the adventure does not have to end when you step off the mountain.

After your trek, we can arrange additional destinations and experiences across Uganda—from chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest and wildlife safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park to gorilla trekking, Crater Lake adventures, cultural experiences, birdwatching and relaxing at Lake Nkuruba.

Whether you want to continue exploring Uganda or simply return to your accommodation and relax after the climb, we can tailor the arrangements around you.
